Federal Taxes & the Australian Taxation Office (ATO)

Are you having problems with the ATO?

The Quinn Group has extensive experience dealing with the ATO on behalf of our clients. We can help you through various negotiations with the ATO, such as the possible reduction in your debt or a reduction in some of your debts. We may also be able to negotiate a weekly or monthly repayment plan on your behalf.

Understanding GST

What is GST?

GST is a tax imposed on most goods sold and services provided in Australia. It is set at a rate of 10%, and payed by registered businesses. It is normally passed on to the consumer in the supply chain.

Are all goods and services taxable under GST?

No, certain supplies are GST free, such as: food, health, education, child care, exports, religious services, charitable activities, water and sewerage, and transports.

Who has to pay GST?

Registered businesses are required to pay GST when their annual turnover meets the registration turnover threshold of $50,000 (or $100,000 if you are a non-profit body).
If you have unpaid GST amounts, or are having trouble registering your business for GST payments, we can help you meet your obligations. If you are experiencing difficulties with any unpaid GST we can help by negotiating with the ATO on your behalf. The negotiations may enable us to reduce some of your debts, and if not, we may be able to negotiate a repayment plan that all parties can be happy with.

Understanding PAYG

What is PAYG?

PAYG is a withholding system known as Pay As You Go. It is a collection tax system. It signifies a legal obligation to withhold amounts from employees' wages/salaries for income tax purposes. These withheld amounts go towards paying the taxpayer's income tax, Medicare and even HECS debts.

Who has to withhold?

The employer is required to withhold the amount if the payment is made to the employee.

How much is withheld?

The amount to be withheld is calculated based on tax tables which are published by the ATO, as well as the information provided by employees in their tax file number declaration.

If your business has some unpaid PAYG, or you are unsure as to how to withhold the amount and how much, we can provide you with all that information so that you can meet your legal obligations. We can also provide you with the tax tables, and an explanation of how they work and which tax bracket your employees fall into.

Unpaid Tax or Tax Audit Problems

If you are experiencing financial difficulties and are unable to meet your tax obligations, we may be able to help you negotiate with the ATO, in a way that suits your financial obligations and avoids general interest charges.

The Quinn Group can attempt to negotiate a reduction in your overall payment, or negotiate a payment plan that can please all parties.

We can also help you with any Tax Audit problems that you may have, such as a Notice of Amended Assessment from the ATO requiring you to pay more tax. If this happens, we discuss it with the ATO to make sure they are correct in their assessment, and if need be we may be able negotiate a reduction in payments or a payment plan on your behalf.
